How long does ceramic coating last?

The honest answer, what wears a coating out early, and how to get every year you paid for.

Short answer: the coating we apply is rated for about 3 years. How long it actually holds up comes down to two things: how well the paint was prepped before it went on, and how the car gets washed after.

Coatings come in different lifespans

“Ceramic” gets put on a lot of labels. Spray-on ceramic sealants from the auto parts store usually last a few months. Professional coatings are thicker and rated in years, often anywhere from 1 to 5+ depending on the product and how many layers go on.

A rating is what you can expect with normal care. It is not a guarantee against neglect: a coated car that never gets washed, or goes through brush car washes every week, will lose its coating sooner.

What makes a coating last

1. Paint prep

A coating bonds to whatever is on the paint. If there is old wax, road film or embedded grit under it, it bonds to that instead and lets go early. That is why our coating job starts with a full wash, chemical and clay decontamination, and a one-step polish before any coating touches the car.

2. Cure time

A fresh coating needs time to harden. For the first few days, keep it out of the rain and sprinklers if you can, and hold off on washing for about a week. We’ll give you the exact window for the product we used on your car.

3. How it gets washed

  • Hand wash with a pH-neutral car soap.
  • Skip brush and cloth car washes. They are the fastest way to wear a coating down and add swirl marks.
  • Dry with a clean microfiber towel or a blower instead of letting water spots dry on the paint.

4. Where the car sits

LA is tough on paint: strong sun most of the year, hard water from sprinklers, bird droppings and tree sap. A garage or carport helps a lot. If you park outside, wipe off bird droppings and sap as soon as you see them.

Signs your coating is wearing off

  • Water stops beading up and sliding off like it used to.
  • Dirt sticks harder and the car takes more effort to clean.
  • The paint does not feel as slick when you run a clean hand over it.

Before you assume it’s gone: a coating that stopped beading is often just covered in a layer of road film. A proper decontamination wash usually brings the beading right back.

Is it worth it in Los Angeles?

Compare it to the other options. Wax lasts a few weeks to a few months (the ceramic sealant in our Full detail gives 3 to 6 months). A paint sealant lasts a few months. A coating lasts years, adds gloss, and makes washing much faster because dirt has a harder time sticking.

What it will not do: make your paint scratch-proof, stop rock chips, or replace washing. If you plan to keep the car a few years and it lives outside, a coating usually pays for itself in time saved and paint that still looks good when you sell.

What it costs with us

Our 3-year ceramic coating is $800 for cars, $850 for SUVs and $900 for lifted trucks, with decontamination and a one-step polish included. We do it at your home or work, and it takes most of the day. See everything that is included on the ceramic coating page.

Quick answers

Does ceramic coating stop scratches and rock chips?

No. It adds a hard, slick layer that can help with very light marring, but it won’t stop rock chips or key scratches. For chip protection you would want paint protection film (PPF).

Can I take a coated car through a car wash?

A touchless wash is fine once in a while. Avoid brush and cloth washes. They wear the coating down and leave swirl marks.

Can you coat an older car?

Yes. The polish step before coating takes out light swirls and haze first. Deep scratches that go through the clear coat will still show.

Do I need to wax over a ceramic coating?

No. Wax just sits on top and hides the coating’s slickness. Regular gentle washes are all it needs.
